Leading up to today, 11/11/11 has taken on many meanings. First and foremost, today is Veteran’s Day in the US and we should all take a moment to remember those who have served our country throughout its history, especially those who gave their lives so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we often take for granted. For me, the most important of those freedoms is being able to openly practice Christianity without fear of the consequences for doing so. It’s hard for Americans to believe, but a large portion of the world does not allow the religious freedom that we enjoy.

That being said, there are two other meanings to 11/11/11 I wanted to bring up.

One, according to VH1 Classic, today has been officially declared National Metal Day. And to celebrate, the channel is devoting all of its programming to Hard Rock/Heavy Metal for the day. This includes a special That Metal Show airing at 11 pm, featuring an hour long Axel Rose interview. Definitely looking forward to that.

The second meaning I thought worthy of bringing up is that many have also declared today as Nigel Tufnel day. Who is Nigel Tufnel? Click here to find out. The clip from the classic mockumentary, Spinal Tap, that caused him to be associated with today is below. Do yourself a favor and watch not only the clip, but also the movie. You don’t even have to be a fan of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal to enjoy it (although it does help).

So, say a prayer for the troops, up the irons \m/, and turn your amps to 11! Today is 11/11/11 and it only comes around once a century.
